How Does My Credit Score Affect Being Added To A Lease When The Original Occupant Qualified By Themselves?
My boyfriend moved into an apartment on his own and qualified both financially and credit-wise. I recently moved in, and am going to add myself on the lease. The question is, if my credit is less than perfect (but no evictions or bankruptcy), how does this work? Can they deny me and inform me that I have to move off the property? The apartment is already vacated so I was wondering if anyone knew how this situation works.

The landlord will want to make sure that you can make the payments on your own should your BF decide to leave. They will also want to do a criminal background check.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:43 pmIf you’re taking over the lease from him, then yes, it can be an issue; they can deny you the ability to lease if you don’t meet their qualifications. If you’re both going to be on the lease, then they’ll just go after him if you default. If he’s not in residence there, though (“already vacated”?) it might become an issue, though; you’ll need to read the contract to see what it allows.
